The "Sacerdote" (priest) design belongs to México's long-running pre-Columbian gold bullion series, which the Casa de Moneda has issued continuously since 1992. These fractional pieces were introduced partly to broaden accessibility to government-backed gold at a time when the peso crisis of 1994–1995 had badly shaken confidence in paper currency. A half-ounce coin priced well below the flagship onza offered a meaningful entry point for small investors still wary of Mexican financial institutions.
The 1996 date places this coin in the immediate recovery period following the Tequila Crisis, when Banco de México was actively encouraging hard-asset savings.
