The Dominican Republic's postwar currency reform of 1947 finally severed the country's long dependence on the U.S. dollar as legal tender — a situation that had persisted since the American customs receivership imposed in 1905. This note belongs to the Banco Central's inaugural series, the institution itself having only been established by law in October 1947, making these among the very first obligations it ever issued.
ABNC produced the plates in New York under contract arrangements typical of the period, when most Latin American central banks lacked domestic printing infrastructure and defaulted to either ABNC or its British rivals. The 50 Pesos Oro denomination would have represented serious purchasing power in the Dominican economy of that moment.
