Colombia's Banco de la República had printed its 50 Pesos Oro notes domestically for years before contracting Thomas De La Rue for this series. The shift reflected ongoing concerns about counterfeiting of mid-denomination notes, which had been a persistent problem through the late 1960s. De La Rue's intaglio work on this issue is noticeably sharper than earlier Colombian production.
The watermark is the sole listed security feature — relatively modest for a denomination that circulated heavily in retail trade. Inflation was already eroding the 50 Pesos Oro's purchasing power by the mid-1970s, and the note's active lifespan was short before higher denominations absorbed everyday transactions.
