This piece belongs to Cuba's Ibero-American series, a joint numismatic program launched in 1991 among Spanish-speaking nations of the Americas to mark the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 voyage. Philip II, the honoree here, was the Spanish monarch who consolidated Habsburg control over a vast colonial apparatus — and whose 1561 decision to make Madrid the permanent capital of the empire effectively centralized the administrative machinery that governed Cuba for centuries.
The series was struck in limited quantities coordinated across multiple mints. Cuba's contribution was produced at the Casa de Moneda de Madrid.
