Cuba's large-format silver issues of the late 1980s and early 1990s were produced under a hard-currency scheme designed to attract foreign collector markets — the domestic population had no access to them. This piece commemorates Ferdinand II of Aragon, whose patronage of Columbus's 1492 voyage was less enthusiastic than legend suggests; he required substantial persuasion from Isabella and initially rejected the proposal outright.
The 1990 date places it squarely in the final stretch of Soviet subsidy, one year before the USSR's collapse would trigger Cuba's "Special Period" and the near-total halt of non-essential state expenditure, including numismatic programs of this scale.
