Cuba's late-1980s and early-1990s gold sport series was produced almost entirely for the hard-currency export market — the coins were never intended to circulate domestically, where dollar transactions were then illegal for ordinary Cubans. Mintages were kept low to sustain collector premiums, and distribution ran primarily through European and Latin American numismatic dealers.
The 1990 Barcelona Olympics provided the nominal occasion for this issue, two years before the Games themselves.
