The Banco de la Província de Buenos Aires was not the national central bank — it was a provincial institution, and that distinction mattered enormously in mid-19th century Argentina. Buenos Aires province and the Argentine Confederation operated separate monetary systems for years following the 1852 split, and the province's bank functioned effectively as its own monetary authority, issuing notes backed by provincial credit rather than any federal guarantee.
The American Bank Note Company in New York handled much of the high-denomination printing for South American issuers during this period, competing directly with European firms for those contracts. The peso fuerte had been Argentina's unit of account since the 1820s, though chronic inflation had already badly eroded public confidence in it by 1869 — the peso moneda nacional would eventually replace it in 1881.
