The Banco Boliviano was one of several private commercial banks chartered in Bolivia during a brief window of financial liberalization in the 1860s, when the government — flush from silver revenues — permitted private note issuance rather than establishing a state bank. These institutions were fragile by design: undercapitalized, operating in a country where metallic coin still dominated daily exchange, and dependent on public confidence that rarely fully materialized.

The Compañía Nacional de Billetes de Banco printed for numerous Latin American clients during this period from its New York operation. Whether this denomination ever circulated widely is doubtful — high-value private notes in 1860s Bolivia faced immediate suspicion, and the bank itself did not survive long into the following decade.
