| 表面の説明 | The Cuban national coat of arms is centrally displayed in the field, featuring the traditional shield with a key, rising sun, and royal palm, supported by an oak branch and laurel wreath. The national legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 50 PESOS is inscribed along the lower border. The coin's fineness and weight, AG 0.999 and 5 OZ, appear on either side of the arms in the field. The design follows the standard Cuban commemorative obverse type established for five-ounce silver issues. |

Cuba's large-format silver issues of the 1990s were partly a hard-currency survival strategy during the "Special Period" — the economic crisis that followed the Soviet Union's collapse and the abrupt end of Soviet subsidies in 1991. These pieces were minted specifically for export sale to foreign collectors, never intended for domestic circulation in a country where ordinary Cubans were prohibited from holding convertible currency.
The colorization was applied after striking, a technique that became commercially prevalent in collector coinage during the early 1990s and remains controversial among purists. KM#506 is one of several wildlife-themed issues from this same program and year.
