Twipsy was the official mascot of Expo 2000, the World's Fair held in Hannover, Germany — the first such exposition of the new millennium and the largest in history by site area. Cuba's participation in Expo 2000 was notable given the island's ongoing economic isolation; the government issued a series of commemorative gold pieces tied to the event as hard-currency earners rather than genuine collectibles for domestic circulation. The coins were sold internationally through state numismatic agencies, never entering Cuban hands in any meaningful sense.
Twipsy itself was designed by Spanish animator Javier Mariscal, who had previously created Cobi, the mascot for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
