Cuba's large-format silver issues of the 1990s were a direct product of the "Special Period" — the severe economic contraction that followed the collapse of Soviet subsidies after 1991. With the domestic economy in crisis and hard currency desperately needed, the Cuban state mint sharply expanded its collector coin program for foreign markets. These pieces never circulated domestically.
The colorization was applied post-strike, a technique increasingly common among world mint collector issues of this decade as mints competed for the novelty-driven numismatic market.
