Edward Teach — "Blackbeard" — had genuine operational ties to Cuba, using Caribbean ports including Havana as resupply points during his active years between roughly 1716 and 1718. Cuba's mid-1990s gold commemorative program leaned heavily on piracy themes, partly as a hard-currency revenue strategy during the Special Period following the Soviet collapse, when the Cuban government was aggressively courting foreign collectors and tourism dollars simultaneously.
