KM#295 entered circulation as part of Colombia's 2012 coinage reform, which reduced the physical size and mass of several denominations in response to rising metal costs that had pushed intrinsic values uncomfortably close to face values. Nickel plated steel replaced the previous alloy specifically to widen that margin.
The 50 peso denomination has existed in Colombian coinage since the 1980s, though chronic inflation steadily eroded its purchasing power to near irrelevance by the 2010s.
