Descrizione del dritto The national coat of arms of Uruguay is displayed prominently in the center of the obverse, featuring an oval escutcheon divided into four quarters depicting a scales of justice, a fortified hilltop, a horse, and an ox, surmounted by a radiant rising sun. The shield is flanked on either side by laurel and olive branches tied at the base with a ribbon, forming a wreath. The circular legend REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin characters. The date 1970 appears in the lower field, divided by the tied wreath, with the Santiago mint mark 'S' positioned below the date. The overall design is executed in a crisp, neoclassical engraving style typical of mid-twentieth-century South American coinage.

Informazioni aggiuntive

Uruguay's 1970 coinage came at a moment of acute economic strain — peso inflation had been grinding through the previous decade, and within two years the government would institute a currency reform replacing 1,000 old pesos with a single nuevo peso. This 50-peso piece was effectively born obsolete, its face value already eroded before it left the mint.
