The Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires was one of the few provincial institutions to survive the chaotic banking reforms of the 1880s with its note-issuing privileges largely intact — temporarily. This 50 Pesos was printed by ABNC in New York during a window of relative institutional confidence, before the catastrophic speculation and credit expansion that collapsed Argentina's financial system in 1890. The Baring Crisis effectively ended provincial note issuance as a meaningful practice.
ABNC's work for Argentine provincial banks in this period was prolific enough that plate elements were sometimes reused or adapted across different issuers, worth examining when verifying this note against similar contemporaries in the PS series.
