备注

El Banco Español de la Habana was established by royal decree in 1856 as the first bank of issue in Cuba, operating under close Crown oversight during a period of significant tension between Spanish colonial administration and a creole merchant class increasingly hostile to Havana's financial arrangements. The 1867–1868 dating of this series places it at a particularly fraught moment: the Ten Years' War broke out in October 1868, and the bank's ability to maintain note convertibility collapsed almost immediately under wartime pressure.

The American Bank Note Company contract for this series was typical of Spanish colonial banking practice — Madrid routinely sourced security printing from New York rather than from Spanish printers, who lacked the technical infrastructure. Notes of this denomination from the 1867–68 emission are considerably scarcer than lower values, reflecting both smaller print runs and high attrition during the war years.
