The Banco Español de la Isla de Cuba issued this note in 1896 — a politically charged moment. Cuba was deep into its second major independence war, the Guerra Necesaria launched by José Martí in 1895, and Spain was pouring military resources into the island while its colonial financial system was visibly straining. Notes of this bank circulated alongside a discredited currency that Cubans widely distrusted, and inflation was punishing ordinary commerce.
The bank lost its right to operate entirely after Spain ceded Cuba following the 1898 war. Outstanding notes became worthless, which is part of why late-series high denominations like this one surface with relatively light wear — holders had little reason to spend what they couldn't redeem.
