The Generalitat de Catalunya resumed autonomous government in 1931 under the Second Spanish Republic, and with it came genuine ambitions for a regional currency infrastructure — ambitions that were never fully realized before the Civil War intervened. This note exists as a trial piece, meaning it was produced to test a proposed design but never authorized for circulation. The distinction matters: this is not a cancelled or withdrawn issue but a proof-stage artifact from an institution that was abolished by Franco in 1938 and would not be restored until 1977.
Trial pieces from the Generalitat series are catalogued under Turró's specialized work on Catalan paper money precisely because standard Pick coverage is inadequate for the regional wartime emissions of Spain.
