The denomination '50 Ptas' appears prominently in the upper left field, with the curved legend 'Islas Chafarinas' arching along the upper right rim. The date '2014' is inscribed in the lower exergue. |

The Chafarinas Islands — three small volcanic islets off the northeastern Moroccan coast — have been a Spanish possession since 1848, when a naval detachment landed hours ahead of a French expedition making for the same anchorage. That near-miss of colonial competition has defined their status ever since: uninhabited by civilians, garrisoned by a small military detachment, and administratively attached to Melilla.
This piece belongs to Spain's "Ciudades y Villas con Sello Real" series, which assigns anachronistic dates drawn from the year each territory received its royal charter or relevant historical privilege — hence 1435, not 2014.
