Issued as part of Spain's ambitious 1992 commemorative program — which also encompassed the Barcelona Olympics, the Seville World Expo, and the quincentenary of Columbus's first voyage — this piece honors Antoni Gaudí's Casa Milà, the Barcelona apartment building completed in 1912 that the city's residents famously nicknamed "La Pedrera" (the quarry) for its undulating stone façade. The nickname was not affectionate at first; contemporary critics were openly hostile to the design.
Spain produced an unusually large volume of commemorative coinage in 1992, and many issues from this program entered circulation rather than collector channels, keeping survival rates high across all grades.
