This note belongs to the brief autonomous emission series issued by regional branches of the Banco de España during the early weeks of the Civil War, before Madrid could reassert central control over currency supply. The Santander branch acted on local authority in the summer of 1936 — a window that closed quickly as the conflict hardened political and military lines.
Santander itself fell to Nationalist forces in August 1937, making the circulation life of this issue exceptionally short. Notes that survived did so largely outside the region.
