This note belongs to a short-lived regional emission authorized after the Nationalist uprising of July 1936 fractured Spain's banking system. Bilbao, then under Republican control, was one of several regional branches of the Banco de España that issued notes independently once communication with Madrid broke down — a practical response to an immediate cash shortage, not a planned monetary reform.
The Basque regional government assumed de facto authority over the branch by late 1936. When Bilbao fell to Nationalist forces in June 1937, remaining stocks were suppressed and surviving circulated examples became considerably harder to find.
