This note draws on a design by Károly Lotz, the nineteenth-century Hungarian academic painter best known for his ceiling frescoes in the Hungarian State Opera House and the Parliament building — an unusual source for banknote artwork, though posthumous borrowings of this kind were not uncommon in Hungarian issues of the period. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank was operating under Soviet occupation by the time these notes entered circulation, the Arrow Cross government having collapsed in early 1945.
Within months, the 50 Pengő was rendered worthless by the hyperinflation of 1945–46 — the worst ever recorded — when the Adópengő and eventually the Forint replaced a currency that had lost all functional value.
