Guernsey has issued commemorative fifty pence pieces under royal licence since 1969, but the WWI centenary series it produced between 2014 and 2018 represents some of the more commercially aggressive output from the island — gold-plated copper marketed at multiples of face value. The Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey was established in November 1920, the Unknown Warrior having been selected from among four unidentified British servicemen exhumed from the Western Front battlefields of the Aisne, the Somme, Arras, and Ypres.
The selection was made blindly by Brigadier General L.J. Wyatt, who touched one of the four caskets in a darkened hut at Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise.
