Reverse description The reverse features a bold, three-quarter facing portrait bust of Field Marshal Sir John French, 1st Earl of Ypres, Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force during the early years of the First World War, rendered in high relief and shown in full military dress uniform with elaborate epaulettes, oak-leaf collar decoration, and a medal cross visible at the base of his chest. To the left of the portrait, in the field, appears the inspirational WWI-era inscription 'LET DUTY BE YOUR WATCHWORD' in large sans-serif capital letters arranged over four lines. Below the inscription sits a decorative laurel wreath enclosing a royal cypher monogram. The coin is struck to a prooflike finish with strongly contrasting frosted and mirrored surfaces.
