Additional information

Sir John French commanded the British Expeditionary Force during the opening campaigns of 1914 and through the grinding attritional battles of 1915, before being relieved by Douglas Haig in December of that year following the failures at Loos. His removal was partly engineered through back-channel communications between Haig and King George V — a political disposal dressed as a military one. French spent the remainder of the war as commander of Home Forces, a role that kept him prominent enough to honor but far enough from the front to matter.
