Jersey issued this piece as part of a broader centenary commemoration series marking the outbreak of the First World War. Kitchener's role in 1914 was pivotal in a specific, practical sense: the regular British Army was catastrophically undersized for continental warfare, and his immediate call for 100,000 volunteers — eventually expanding into the "New Armies" — transformed Britain's military capacity almost from scratch. He remains one of the few figures who grasped early that the war would last years, not months, when nearly everyone else predicted a swift conclusion.
He died in June 1916 when HMS Hampshire struck a German mine off Orkney.
