Jersey's extended WWI centenary commemorative program, launched in 2014, was designed to run through 2018 — one coin for each year of the conflict. This "Departing for War" piece opens that sequence. The States of Jersey issued the series in gold-plated steel rather than cupronickel specifically to differentiate the commemorative run from circulating coinage, though the face value technically renders them legal tender.
Jersey was occupied by German forces in 1940–45, giving the island's WWI commemorations a particular edge — the generation that departed for the Somme raised children who would themselves live under occupation.
