Guernsey's WWI centenary program produced a sprawling series of commemoratives between 2014 and 2018, this Cenotaph piece among them. The island lost a disproportionate share of its population in the Great War — roughly 1,100 Guernseymen died from a pre-war population of around 42,000, a casualty rate that hit rural parishes particularly hard. The Cenotaph at St. Peter Port was unveiled in 1926, four years after Lutyens' London original set the template.
Gold-plated copper issues of this type were produced for the collector market and saw no meaningful circulation.
