Additional information

Churchill's appearance on Guernsey coinage carries specific resonance: the island was occupied by German forces from June 1940 until May 1945, and Churchill's decision not to defend the Channel Islands — made within days of the French armistice — remains a contested chapter in his wartime record. Guernseymen lived under occupation while Britain fought on without them.

Gold-plated copper issues of this type were produced in bulk for the commemorative market and saw no meaningful circulation.
