Reverse description Full-length figure of Queen Elizabeth II walking to the left, dressed in a skirt suit and holding a bouquet of flowers, set against a crowd of well-wishers lining a barrier in the lower field. Above the central scene, a colorful arc of red, white, and blue bunting flags rendered in applied enamel spans the upper portion of the coin, evoking celebratory street decorations. Additional information

Issued to mark the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II's accession, this colored copper-nickel piece is one of dozens of commemorative 50 pence types the Falkland Islands produced during the 2002 jubilee year. The islands' relationship with the Crown carried particular weight after 1982, when British forces retook the territory following the Argentine invasion — a conflict that cost 255 British and 649 Argentine lives and cemented Falkland Islander loyalty to the monarchy with an intensity rarely found elsewhere in the remaining overseas territories.
