Jersey issued this piece to mark the 70th anniversary of Liberation Day — May 9, 1945, when German occupation of the Channel Islands formally ended. The Channel Islands were the only British territory occupied by Nazi Germany during the war, and Jersey endured nearly five years of German administration, food shortages, and deportations. The liberation itself came a day after Germany's unconditional surrender in Europe.
The pad-printed gold-plated steel construction places this firmly in the modern commemorative category rather than bullion.
