Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II·DEI·GRA·REG·FID·DEF·2019· J.C
(Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith)
Reverse description The reverse, designed by Clive Duncan, features a bold central motif of a helmeted soldier in combat uniform carrying a wounded comrade to safety, evoking the selfless acts of valour for which the Victoria Cross is awarded. The two figures are rendered in high relief against the stylised outline of the Victoria Cross medal, whose four arms radiate outward with fine engraved line texturing to suggest light or explosive energy emanating from the cross. The denomination legend FIFTY PENCE is inscribed in spaced capitals along the lower arc of the field, flanking the base of the composition, with the engraver's initials CD appearing centrally just below the figures. The interplay of mirror-polished fields within the cross arms and the frosted sculptural group creates a dramatic visual contrast befitting the piedfort proof format.
