The 2009 Victoria Cross 50p commemorates the 150th anniversary of the decoration's first awards, gazetted on 26 June 1857 for acts of valor during the Crimean War. The VC itself was famously cast from the bronze of Russian cannon captured at Sevastopol — a detail the Royal Mint leaned on heavily in its broader commemorative program that year, which included both the soldier and sailor reverses issued as a paired set.
As a gold piedfort, the planchet is double the standard thickness, struck twice to achieve full die detail in the soft metal.
