| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a detailed artistic rendering of both faces of the Victoria Cross medal in high relief. To the left, the obverse of the cross pattée is depicted in full, suspended from its characteristic V-shaped suspender bar with laurel decoration; the central medallion displays a crowned lion passant guardant above a crown, encircled by the motto FOR VALOUR on a rope border. To the right, the reverse of the medal is shown, featuring a Maltese-style cross with a circular central panel inscribed with the date 29. JAN 1856. — the date of the Royal Warrant establishing the decoration. The abbreviation VC appears prominently to the lower right of the reverse motif, with the denomination FIFTY PENCE inscribed along the lower field and exergue respectively. The engraver's mark CHA is visible in the lower left field. |
