Jersey has issued commemorative 50 pence pieces with some regularity, but the VE Day series released in 2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the May 1945 surrender — an event that carried particular weight for the island, which had endured five years of German occupation from July 1940 until liberation on 9 May 1945. That date is still observed as a public holiday in Jersey and Guernsey, unlike anywhere else in the British Isles.
Gold-plated steel rather than cupro-nickel signals a collectibles-market issue from the outset — never intended for the till.
