The Isle of Man has issued commemorative coinage under royal licence since the early 1970s, and its relationship with Pobjoy Mint produced some of the most aggressively marketed collector pieces of the late twentieth century — a tradition that continues with issues like this one. The island holds no formal obligation to align its commemorative output with Westminster, which gives the Manx Treasury considerable latitude in selecting anniversaries worth striking in gold.
VE Day fell on 8 May 1945, with the Trafalgar Square celebrations among the most photographed moments of the entire war's conclusion. Churchill had to be talked out of joining the crowds in the square by security staff.
