Alderney's commemorative program has long operated as a revenue vehicle for the Bailiwick of Guernsey rather than a functioning currency — these pieces are legal tender in name only, priced well above face value and never intended to circulate. The VE-Day series issued in 2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the German surrender, a date with particular resonance for the Channel Islands, which endured the only British civilian occupation of the war from 1940 until liberation on 9 May 1945 — one day after the official VE-Day.
