Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse depicts a stylised representation of a triathlete in dynamic motion, designed by Sarah Harvey as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games commemorative series. The athlete is shown in a fluid, energetic composition evoking the three disciplines of the triathlon — swimming, cycling, and running — rendered in a bold, graphic artistic style consistent with the broader Olympic 50 pence series. The London 2012 Olympic logo appears within the design field. The legend LONDON 2012 50 PENCE is inscribed around the periphery of the heptagonal flan.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued as part of the Royal Mint's London 2012 Olympic program, which ultimately comprised 29 individual 50p designs — the largest number of coins ever produced for a single Olympic Games by any host nation's mint. The piedfort format, struck at twice the standard thickness on specially prepared blanks, has been a Royal Mint specialty since its revival in 1982 for collector issues.

Gold piedforts from this series were limited to mintages measured in the hundreds rather than thousands. The triathlon event itself made its Olympic debut at Sydney in 2000, making 2012 only its fourth appearance.
