The Isle of Man Treasury has long exploited its status as a Crown dependency — outside the UK but owing allegiance to the Crown — to issue commemorative coinage with essentially no constraints on subject matter. Peter Pan fits neatly into this tradition: J.M. Barrie transferred the copyright of the play and novel to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1929, a gift that has funded pediatric care for nearly a century. The selective colour application on this proof strikes the ink directly onto the mirrored field, a process that requires the planchet to be struck before colouring rather than after.
