The White Lion of Mortimer is one of the ten heraldic beasts drawn from the lineage of Henry VIII, popularized through their stone incarnations at Hampton Court Palace in the 1530s. Jersey's 2013 issue belongs to a broader Queen's Beasts commemorative program that preceded the Royal Mint's better-known bullion series by several years. The Mortimer lion specifically traces to Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, whose descendants fed directly into the Yorkist claim to the English throne.
