One of ten coins in the Royal Arms Supporters series issued by Jersey, this piece draws on the heraldic tradition of the "Queen's Beasts" — the ten guardians of the British royal coat of arms as arranged for Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation. The Unicorn of Scotland entered the royal arms through the 1603 union of the English and Scottish crowns under James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England. Scottish heraldic tradition holds the unicorn so dangerous it must be chained — the chain visible on the royal arms is not decorative.
