This piece is one of a series issued by Jersey depicting the heraldic beasts associated with the British royal family, drawing on the tradition established by Henry VIII's original ten King's Beasts carved for Hampton Court Palace. The Red Dragon specifically entered the royal heraldic vocabulary through the Tudor claim to ancient British — and ultimately Welsh — kingship, a lineage Henry VII exploited aggressively to legitimize his dynasty after Bosworth.
Jersey issues of this type are struck under licence and carry legal tender status on the island, though they are produced primarily for the collector market by the Jersey Mint in conjunction with external minting contractors.
