The "Coffin" designation almost certainly refers to the coin's place in a Halloween or macabre-themed series, a format Gibraltar's treasury has leaned into aggressively over the past decade to drive collector demand from a territory with a resident population of under 35,000.
Gold-plated silver strikes of this type are typically produced in limited runs for the collector market, with base circulation coinage issued separately in cupro-nickel.
