Reverse description The reverse, designed and engraved by Robert Nicholls, presents a finely detailed naturalistic depiction of the Temnodontosaurus, a large Jurassic marine reptile, shown in three-quarter profile emerging dynamically from stylised water. In the lower field, a faithful rendering of the fossilised skull specimen — as discovered by Mary Anning in 1811 — is shown in careful relief, its large sclerotic eye ring prominently rendered. To the right, a delicate engraving of a Jurassic-era plant frond provides additional palaeontological context, alongside the engraver's initials 'RN'. The legend 'TEMNODONTOSAURUS' arcs along the upper border, while 'MARY ANNING 1811' is inscribed along the lower arc, commemorating the pioneering fossil hunter's discovery.
