One of a series of twenty-nine Olympic sport 50p pieces issued in the run-up to London 2012, this silver proof version was struck alongside a cupro-nickel circulation counterpart designed by Jonathan Wiltshire. The broader Olympic 50p program was the largest thematic coin series the Royal Mint had produced, and demand for individual sports led to sharp disparities in secondary market values almost immediately after release.
Taekwondo became a full Olympic discipline only in Sydney 2000, making it among the newer sports commemorated in the set.
