Issued to mark the London 2012 Olympics, this piece belongs to a sprawling 29-coin sports series commissioned by the Royal Mint — the largest commemorative programme in British decimal history. Each denomination was paired with a specific sport, the pairings assigned by committee rather than any obvious logic, which is why taekwondo ended up on a fifty pence rather than, say, the discipline's relative profile might have suggested a different placement.
