One of dozens of sport-themed 50 pence pieces the Isle of Man has issued under its arrangement with Pobjoy Mint, which has struck commemorative and circulating coinage for the territory since 1973. The Isle of Man's unusual degree of fiscal autonomy — it issues its own currency outside the UK's monetary union while maintaining parity with sterling — has made it a prolific source of themed collector coinage with no equivalent in mainland British minting.
