| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse, designed by Aaron West, presents an abstract geometric composition evoking Newton's principal scientific discoveries. A stylised solar disc rendered with radiating lines occupies the central field, encircled by a series of concentric arcs representing planetary orbits and the laws of gravitation. Multiple diagonal straight lines intersect the circular elements, alluding to Newton's work in optics and the refraction of light. The legend SIR ISAAC NEWTON arcs along the upper field, while FIFTY PENCE appears along the lower periphery; the engraver's monogram AW is visible in the lower right field. The overall composition, executed with fine engine-turned line work, creates a dynamic interplay of curves and diagonals befitting Newton's contributions to mathematics and natural philosophy. |

This piece was issued to mark the 375th anniversary of Newton's birth, though the Royal Mint had already placed Newton on the 50 pence once before — the 1978 issue commemorating his presidency of the Royal Society. The 2017 proof program drew from a broader cultural series celebrating British scientific and intellectual figures, itself a deliberate pivot by the Mint toward collectible themed silver issues in the post-decimal era.
Newton spent the last three decades of his life as Warden and then Master of the Royal Mint, personally overseeing the Great Recoinage of 1696 and prosecuting counterfeiters with unusual zeal — securing at least 28 convictions for high treason.
