The 2019 date marks the centenary of Scouting receiving its Royal Charter, granted in 1912 — meaning the movement had operated for seven years before the Crown formally recognised it. Baden-Powell founded the Scouts in 1907 following the experimental camp on Brownsea Island, and by the time of the Charter the membership already numbered in the hundreds of thousands. The Royal Mint had previously commemorated Scouting on a 50 pence in 1982, making this a second return to the subject rather than a first.
